About The Contest
The first ever Olympiad of Misguided Geeks contest at Worse Than Failure (or OMGWTF for short) is a new kind of programming contest. Readers are invited to be creative with devising a calculator with the craziest code they can write. One lucky and potentially insane winner will get either a brand new MacBook Pro or comparable Sony VAIO laptop.
Entry #100160: EnterpriseCalc Pro 2
by Frederick Cheung
to run, net access to www.google.com and www.yahoo.com is required.
Software today is all about reusing tried and trusted components, while I am sure some entries will have intricate homebrew arithmetic packages, why bother? Instead this program leverages google's domination and uses its calculator functions.
This calculator is also easily extensible, for example adding a power operator or conversions to furlongs would be a trivial extension.
However, cleverness is nothing without reliability, nothing can truly be enterprise-grade software without redundancy. If this level of performance is required, switch on Enterprise Mode and all calculations performed by google are checked by also submitting them to yahoo. Although it passes all test cases, Enterprise mode is not yet available for all calculations (eg 356345 * 39)
