About The Contest

The first ever Olympiad of Misguided Geeks contest at Worse Than Failure (or OMGWTF for short) is a new kind of programming contest. Readers are invited to be creative with devising a calculator with the craziest code they can write. One lucky and potentially insane winner will get either a brand new MacBook Pro or comparable Sony VAIO laptop.

Entry #100174: Calc-Q

by Dominic Scheirlinck
My calculator makes us of a formal axiomatic system known as Robinson arithmetic, or Q, to figure out sums, differences and products. There's a fairly technical article about Q on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_arithmetic

There's also a description of the axioms and how they're used in the included readme file.

When you can't trust numbers, registers, nand gates, electricity, circuits, transistors, you should be able to trust the rules of pure logic. There's nothing better. Of course, this calculator's "pure logic" is implemented with numbers, registers, etc. But shhhhh! That's beside the point!
