About The Contest
The first ever Olympiad of Misguided Geeks contest at Worse Than Failure (or OMGWTF for short) is a new kind of programming contest. Readers are invited to be creative with devising a calculator with the craziest code they can write. One lucky and potentially insane winner will get either a brand new MacBook Pro or comparable Sony VAIO laptop.
Entry #100207: William's Totally Funky Calculator
by William Rose
As seen in the short description, this is about effective reuse; a commoditised, component-driven, meta-programming approach that assembles small blocks of code (e.g. Windows' calc.exe) and makes a less functional whole.
The longer version is that my idea of a good WTF is closer to farce than slapstick: I believe most WTFers do not set out to do deliberately stupid things in real life, they end up doing them through trying to behave rationally. So a good WTF is misguided, not obviously wrong, and should make us question our own rationality and the arguments we use to defend it. My gauge of success was when I started to worry that bits where I wasn't trying for WTF seemed to shine brightest as the most WTFey things in the whole app.
